How Do I Find Out About Job Opportunities?
- Review job postings for positions in which you are interested.
- It is important that you read the entire job posting because it contains critical information about the job and the screening and hiring process. Job postings list the job title, salary, hiring agency, job location, work hours, job duties, job requirements, and type of test that will be used.
- Types of Job Postings:
- Open Competitive job postings are open for state employees and the general public to apply.
- Merit Only job postings are open ONLY to State of Delaware government employees who have completed the initial probationary period in a classified position. If you are not a Delaware government employee and have not completed your initial probationary period, please do not apply to the job posting because your application cannot be considered eligible.
- Casual/Seasonal job postings are open for the general public to apply. Casual/seasonal positions do not provide benefits such as leave time or health insurance.
- In-House job postings are open ONLY to State of Delaware government employees who have completed the initial probationary period in a classified position and are employed by the hiring agency. If you do not meet these requirements, please do not apply to the job posting because your application cannot be considered eligible.
- Applications are accepted only when there is a job posting. Resumes are accepted only when accompanied with a completed application.
- Job Postings are announced for a minimum of 7 calendar days.
- Applications must be received by the closing date. Additional information or changes to your application will not be accepted after you submit your application.
- Job Postings are added to the web site regularly. It is suggested to check the web site at least once a week.
- You may register online at Notify Me of New Jobs to be notified by email when job postings are open.
- State of Delaware job classifications can be found online. Go to Job Seekers Resources. Here you will see Class Specifications and the Job Search Agent. Both of these sections allow you to search the various job classifications to see what you may be interested in and the job requirements that you must meet to be considered for that classification. If you view the job classifications through the Job Search Agent, you can select job groups to narrow your search. The job groups contain the classification titles and when you click on a title, it will show you the classification description that includes the job requirements.

How Do I know If I Qualify?
- When you find a job posting for a position that interests you, assess whether you think you meet the job requirements.
- Each job requirement must be met in order to be determined "Qualified". If you do not possess ALL of the job requirements, please do not submit an application. Your application will be rated "Not Qualified" and will not be considered further.
- If the job requirements state "experience", you must possess experience in that area. Education is not a substitute for experience. If you do not possess experience in the area, your application will be rated "Not Qualified."
- If the job requirements state "knowledge", you must possess education, training and/or experience in that area. If you do not possess education, training or experience in the area required, your application will be rated "Not Qualified".
- If a Selective Requirement is included on the job posting, this is an additional job requirement that must be met to qualify.
- If there is a Preferred Qualification included on the job posting, this is a desirable qualification that does not have to be met to qualify.
- If you are sure you do not meet the job requirements, please search for other job opportunities for which you may qualify.

- Complete the application with all of your employment and education history.
| | Note: Any misrepresentation or falsification may result in rejection of your application, dismissal and disqualification of future job applications.
| |
- Complete the Supplemental Questionnaire
- The Supplemental Questionnaire is part of the job selection process. Note: Each time you apply for a position you will be required to complete a new questionnaire.
- Use the rating scale to select the answer that most accurately describes your proficiency for each job requirement. Your choices are:
- Knowledge/No Work Experience
- Applied Work Experience
- Thorough Work Experience
- Expert Work Experience
- IMPORTANT: Complete the narrative boxes for each job requirement.

If you do not provide specifics about each job requirement that details your education, training and/or experience as required by the job requirement, it could result in being determined "Not Qualified". Describe in detail your education, training and experience as accurately and completely as possible including month/year, start and end dates for each period of employment.

How Is My Application Evaluated And Ranked?
- The recruiting agency evaluates each application against the job requirements and any selective requirements. Applications determined "qualified" progress to the next step in the screening and hiring process.
- When a written test is required and you meet the job requirements, you are emailed instructions for scheduling the date, time and location for the written test.
- When a rating of training and experience is used to score and rank qualified applications, your application is evaluated based on the description of education, training and/or experience you possess in relation to the particular job requirements for a specific vacancy.
- When a rating of training and experience is used to score and rank qualified applications, veterans and disabled veterans shall receive 5 additional and 10 additional points respectively for initial employment only, provided they have obtained a passing score and that they present a copy of their DD 214 form and, if applicable, a copy of the VA Approved Disability including claim number. Widows or widowers of deceased veterans that have not remarried are also eligible for these points.
|
How Am I Notified?
- You are notified by the recruiting agency of the results of the evaluation of your application for the job requirements and, if applicable, the written test by e-mail.
- It is important to keep the recruiting agency informed of any changes to your address, phone number, or e-mail address so that you can be reached when contacted. This can be done by going online to www.delawarestatejobs.com and clicking on Update My Contact Info on the career opportunities page. Your changes will be reflected immediately on all of your past and future applications

How Are Jobs Filled?
- All candidates that meet the job requirements are considered qualified applicants and are placed on the eligibility list. The recruiting agency provides the hiring manager with a referral list that is generated from the eligibility list. If there are 30 or less applicants, each applicant is placed on the referral list in alphabetical order. If there are more than 30 applicants on the eligibility list, the referral list contains the top 30 candidates based on a rating of training and experience or, when applicable a written exam score (plus any applicants with scores tied with the 30th name).
- The hiring manager decides which candidates to interview and makes a selection from the referral list. The hiring agency is not required to contact all applicants on the referral list unless it is an underrepresented position. To improve your chances of being contacted, it is essential that you include a detailed description of your education, training, employment history and job duties in addition to completing the narrative boxes to support how you meet the job requirements. This will ensure the hiring manager has a clear picture of your education, training and experience.
- Conditions of Hire: when an agency makes a conditional job offer, the applicant must pass further screening for items such as drug testing or strength and agility tests OR the applicant must possess job requirements such as a professional license prior to the start date of employment. If the candidate cannot pass or possess these requirements, the job offer is rescinded. Conditions of hire are listed on the job posting.
- Access the status board to check the status of the hiring process. It is located in DEL under Status of Closed Postings . Please contact the recruiting agency listed on the posting when you have additional inquiries.
